

While there is a perceived danger from the mother bear, all most reviews support the idea that this book is a happy one. All reviews agree that it is humorous with a small element of danger, and that the art is very nice.

The Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database notes that Blueberries for Sal is a winner of the Ohioana Book Award in 1949 and was on the Texas Reading Club list in 2004.

Because of those features, Blueberries for Sal has been listed as one of the top 50 kids books ever, one of the ten books every three year old should own, and is still recommended to teachers for use in the classroom. Due to McCloskey’s unique and appropriate writing style, Blueberries for Sal became a Caldecott Honor recipient, for its classic story and beautiful storytelling layout.
